What Causes A Power Surge?

Power surges have many causes and because of the nature of them, are always unexpected. That is why it is crucial to already have surge protection devices such as Transient Voltage Surge Suppression devices in place. There are some power boards that have in built surge protection, however this does not protect an entire building.
Here are a few main causes of a power surge:

  • Tripped Circuit Breakers - While a working circuit breaker will protect a power system, one that is damaged and not repaired is a risk.
  • Electrical Devices - High powered electrical devices have the potential to cause electricity to spike, especially when a motor starts up.
  • Faulty Wiring - Damaged wires will cause all sorts of problems throughout a power system, call us for repairs.
  • Lightning - We all know that lighting is a massive bolt of electricity, if one strikes your building it will send a surge of power into the system.

Different types of surge protection setups

Surge protection setup is an important element of a complete electrical system. It can be used to protect your home or business from power surges that could damage equipment, cause fires, and cost you money in lost energy. There are several types of surge protection setups available for both residential and commercial applications.

For residential use, the most common setup is the whole house surge protector. This is usually installed on the main breaker panel in your home, and it protects all of the circuits connected to that panel. It works by measuring the incoming voltage from your power company's grid and automatically disconnecting when an abnormally high voltage is detected, thus preventing damage to any of your appliances or electronics.

For commercial applications, the most popular surge protection setup is the point-of-use type. This type of surge protector is installed at each outlet and works on a much smaller scale than the whole house version. It is designed to protect only that particular outlet from any abnormal incoming voltage levels. Point-of-use surge protectors can provide extra protection for sensitive electronics, such as computers and other electronic devices.

Another popular surge protection setup is the panel-mounted type. This type of surge protector is installed directly onto the breaker panel and works on a much larger scale than the point-of-use version. It is designed to protect all of the circuits connected to it from any abnormal incoming voltage levels. This type of surge protection setup is usually used in commercial applications and is also more expensive than the other types.

No matter which surge protection setup you choose, it is important to make sure that it meets the requirements of your individual home or business needs. It is also important to regularly test and maintain your system in order to ensure maximum protection from any power surges. With the right setup, you can protect your home or business from costly damages due to power surges.
